Meeting of the Kazakhstan-Canada Parliamentary Friendship Group

Meeting of the Kazakhstan-Canada Parliamentary Friendship Group was held on the Parliament Hill in Ottawa on February 26, 2014 with participation of its new Co-Chairs MP Leon Benoit and Senator Asha Seth and other Canadian parliamentarians.
The meeting provided an opportunity to discuss Kazakhstan-Canadian cooperation in many areas, including energy, agriculture, education, human rights and religious freedom.
Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada Bob Dechert noted Kazakhstan’s initiatives in the sphere of interethnic and interreligious dialogue, welcoming the organization of the Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions in Kazakhstan’s capital Astana.
Chair of Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food, MP Bev Shipley noting the visit of Canada’s Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada Gerry Ritz to Kazakhstan in May 2013 called for further strengthening of political and economic ties between the two countries.
In his remarks to the Group Ambassador of Kazakhstan to Canada Konstantin Zhigalov underlined the importance of the visits of Speaker of the Lower Chamber of Kazakhstan’s Parliament Nurlan Nigmatulin and Chairman of the Ecology and Environment Committee of the Lower House of Kazakhstan’s Parliament Alexander Miliutin to Canada in November for the development of Kazakhstan-Canadian parliamentarian cooperation.
With a view to further strengthen Kazakhstan-Canadian dialogue and promote inter-parliamentary diplomacy, participants of the meeting agreed that the visit of the delegation of the Kazakhstan-Canada Parliamentary Friendship Group to Kazakhstan will be an important step in this direction.
